Nadat Berry Gordy hem in de vroege jaren zestig op het Motown-label tekent, beleeft Marvin Gaye al snel zijn eerste successen. In de beginperiode levert hij hit na hit met nummers als “Can I Get A Witness”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” en “Ain”t No Mountain High Enough”. Mede dankzij Gaye groeit Motown uit tot het meest toonaangevende soullabel ter wereld. De muzikale nalatenschap van de veel te jong overleden Gaye leeft echter tot de dag van vandaag voort.
